"It gave her freedom"

I think I've reached the heights of maudlin behavior when my throat starts to catch or my eyes start to sting a little while watching, not a movie, but a movie trailer.

But I think "Everlasting Moments" will be the exception.

Perhaps it's the theme of seeing that captured me, or how the gift of a camera can move a woman to tears, or how photographs are miniature pieces of art that people take for granted, or how people don't often pay attention to what they see or how they see things. Or perhaps it's because of the story. The story of a woman who finds, through the lens of a camera, a measure of independence and dignity that frees her mentally from the bleakness of her life.

A silly thing I heard on a Sunday

I was exploring the aisles of a bookstore today when I heard the silliest answer a parent could give to a child asking for book recommendations -

Boy (about nine years old) - "Mom, what books do you think I should read?"
Mother with a glossy magazine - "Storybooks."

The boy may have been young but he seemed sharper than his mother. "Huh? What do you mean? 'Storybooks' is kind of a funny answer!"

Finally he picked up a book and asked his father (also armed with a glossy magazine) and asked, "What's Robinson Crusoe about?" Thankfully, the father knew the book and answered him well. But then the mother began competing for the man's attention by showing him an ad in her magazine and babbling about it as he spoke to his son.

I shook off the desire to snatch the woman's magazine away, resisted the temptation to point out some titles I thought would suit, and hoped the father would save the boy from the cursed fate of having an empty bookshelf at home. (I hope he has a bookshelf.)
